Tajweed is an Arabic term meaning “to make better”, “to improve”, or “to beautify”.
In the context of the Qur’an, it is the science of correct pronunciation and recitation of Allah’s words.
The purpose of Tajweed is to recite the Qur’an exactly as it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibrīl, preserving its phonetics, rhythm, and meaning.
Prevents pronunciation errors that may change meanings
(e.g., “qalb” – heart vs. “kalb” – dog)
Preserves the beauty and accuracy of Qur’anic recitation
Strengthens spiritual connection with the Qur’an
Learning Tajweed is considered an individual obligation (farḍ ‘ayn) to the best of one’s ability, especially for verses used in daily prayers.
